Tribute for Prince Philip

His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip,

Duke of Edinburgh

6 February 1952 – 9 April 2021

With the sad news of His Royal Highness, Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh's death, as Archbishop John Sentamu said in his excellent tribute on the BBC, we continue the prayers that we pray each week in our traditional service for the the Queen and her whole family.  The Book of Common Prayer, "Prayer for the Queen's Majesty".

O Lord our heavenly Father, high and mighty, King of kings, Lord of lords, the only Ruler of princes, who dost from thy throne behold all the dwellers upon earth; most heartily we beseech thee with thy favour to behold our most gracious Sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth and so replenish her with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, that she may alway incline to thy will, and walk in thy way: endue her plenteously with heavenly gifts; grant her in health and wealth long to live; strengthen her that she may vanquish and overcome all her enemies; and finally, after this life, she may attain everlasting joy and felicity (happiness); through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prince Philip has been such a pioneer and inspiration in so many significant areas of life, for the natural world, for young people through his award scheme, in humility, and service, taking the opportunities that he had through his perspective and position to improve the world, and make others aware of the issues.  Archbishop Justin said he had a prophetic gift. My prayer is that all the analysis and attention about his life, will serve to inspire us in our generation to step up to help our young people through challenge and opportunity, to grow up well, and fulfil their potential.

Prayer of Thanksgiving for Prince Philip

Eternal God, our heavenly Father, we bless your holy name for all that you have given us in and through the life of Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

We give you thanks: for his long and full life; for his strength of character; and for his devotion and service to family, nation and Commonwealth.

We praise you for: his generosity; the many contributions he made to our national life; and the encouragement he gave to so many, especially to the young. Accept our thanks and praise, we pray, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
