St Luke’s Churchyard Trees

East Hampshire District Council for planning permission to remove seven of the eleven sweet chestnut trees in the north-west corner of the churchyard.

The trees cannot be removed at present owing to a Tree Protection Order (TPO) placed on them in 1998. This is the first of the planned ‘bulletins’ which will let you know what action is currently taking place, as this scheme proceeds.

The seven trees, for which removal permission is to be sought, all stand on the mound of grave spoil. The four TPO trees along the Whitmore Vale Road boundary (two either side of the gate) will remain. The removal of the seven trees is required to provide much needed new grave space.

If we obtain permission to remove the trees, the proposal is to along the Whitmore Vale Road boundary. The intention is that, if the scheme goes ahead, in the course of time, the Whitmore Vale Road churchyard boundary will replicate the tree lined Headley Road boundary.

The seeking of planning permission the plan is replace them with oaks and sweet chestnuts. This is the first of a number of steps that will need to be taken including obtaining a Faculty from the Diocese, obtaining quotations from contractors that are affordable, prioritizing the scheme against other important Church projects and, finally, raising the necessary funds. Thus, the earliest work might start will be 2014.
